Both Dunfermline City teams were in cup action at the weekend with mixed results.
The first team came up against a strong Rottenrow team on Sunday and were defeated 3 – 0 giving the Glasgow side some revenge for City’s defeat of them in the same competition last season.
Missing several regulars, City were always up against it from the start and struggled to make any impact in the early stages. The west coasts side’s pressure was rewarded in the 25th minute when their forward finished expertedly with his reverse stick from the top of the D. However, City then came back into the game strongly and created several chances of their own with perhaps the best falling to Captain Brent Walker who uncharacteristically skewed his shot wide just before half time.
City were made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal when Rottenrow doubled their lead with a short corner on the forty minute mark. City continued to create chances but the final ball was slightly lacking. Rottenrow them made it three with a late goal on the counter attack with City pushing upfield trying to get back in the game. However, the defeat is no disgrace for City who now enter the plate competition due to the loss.
There was better news for City’s second XI who defeated Carnegie on penalty flicks to progess to the next round of the reserve cup. An early goal from Carnegie put the Rosyth based team ahead but an experly taken strike from Allan Griffiths levelled the scores. Veteran striker Alan Green then tapped in to put City 2 – 1 ahead. It looked like City were all set to progress to the next round but the Carnegie umpire then awarded a highly debatable late penalty which was converted leaving the final score at 2-2. However, in the resulting penalty flick contest, goalkeeper Brian Brown was the City hero with saves from Carnegie players Salthouse and Dickson.
This coming weekend, City 1st XI team travel to Peebles looking to continue their 100% league record whilst the 2nd XI team host Fidra Lions at 10.30 at Queen Anne High School.
